Supporting Communication & Language with WellComm

At Buzzee Beez Preschool, supporting children's speech, language and communication is an important part of what we do. Good communication skills help children express their needs and feelings, build friendships, develop confidence and prepare for future learning.

What is WellComm?

​

WellComm is an Early Years speech and language screening and intervention toolkit. It helps us understand how each child's communication and language skills are developing and identify any areas where they may benefit from a little extra support.

The screening is not a test or an exam and there is nothing for children to practise beforehand. It is carried out individually with a familiar member of our team through simple, age-appropriate activities, pictures, questions and conversation.

How We Use WellComm at Buzzee Beez

We use WellComm as part of our ongoing approach to monitoring and supporting children's communication and language development.

The screening helps us to:

• recognise children's communication strengths

• identify areas that may need some additional support

• plan activities suited to individual children's needs

• monitor children's progress over time

• work in partnership with parents and carers

• identify when further advice or support may be beneficial

What Do the Results Mean?

​

WellComm uses a simple traffic-light system:

Green – Communication and language skills are developing within the expected range.

Amber – Your child may benefit from some additional targeted activities and support.

Red – Your child may need more focused support and we may discuss whether further advice or assessment would be helpful.

A colour is not a diagnosis or a label. It simply helps us decide how best to support your child's individual communication development.

What Happens If My Child Needs Support?

​

One of the things we particularly like about WellComm is that it doesn't just identify an area of need – it helps us do something about it.

WellComm's Big Book of Ideas provides fun, practical and play-based activities that we can use individually, in small groups or as part of children's everyday play and learning.

Where appropriate, we can also share ideas with you to try at home, helping us work together to support your child's progress.

Every child develops at their own pace, and our aim is to identify their individual strengths and needs early so that we can provide the right support at the right time.

Through WellComm, our everyday interactions and close partnership with families, we aim to give every child the confidence and communication skills they need to talk, listen, connect and thrive.
